Kyogles Stratheden Street Piano is here!
The idea was put forward in 2025 as a means to creative community engagement - street pianos have been placed in towns and cities all over the world to add colour and music to streetscapes.
The upright piano, generously donated by a local resident, has taken its place on Stratheden Street next to the Kyogle Memorial Institute Hall (KMI) in the next few months. There it will be available for anyone to sit down and play, from practiced musicians to curious passersby. The Stratheden Street Piano aims to bring joy, spontaneity and shared connection to town.
The piano will be in place for a three-month trial while Council gathers community feedback.
Local artist Sally Joyce has been selected to transform the donated piano into a piece of art.
Kyogle Council would like to thank community members who have volunteered their time and skills to make the piano a beautiful and in-tune, work of art. Sally Joyce for her original hand-painted artwork in collaboration with Aunty Kali McBride, Angus Joyce and Toby Joyce. As well as expert contributions from Anna Woltman and Vaughan Davies in getting the piano up to scratch for its new home.

Do you love the artwork?
Does the sound of music inspire you to have a go?
Does the piano impact on how you use the space?
The GUESTBOOK has closed. A report will be reviewed at the October 2026 Council meeting.
The piano with its beautiful artwork adds music to the corridors of creative Kyogle. Finally Kyogle is becoming what its slogan calls out “Gateway to the Border Ranges” through the Fine Arts, the Crafts, Music and Singing, Trees and Flowers… along with wonderful Cafes. That Piano when played is such a rich addition to our local life in Kyogle. Thank you to those who took the initiative to install it. It’s wonderful to ‘live’ music being played instead of electronic or records or Spotify, whether students of the Con, primary school kids, local adults, professionals. Please do not remove this piano!

I love hearing the piano play, even little children giving the keyboard a whack. Notably young players at the markets and on quiet days are a treat. I play it from time to time. I don’t have a full piano at home so it’s refreshing. I hope Council appreciates this asset, budgets for a regular tune, and retains it. No one has complained, (which they might to me) and I recently counted nearly 500 market visitors (+ 21 dogs all on leashes) with piano playing sometimes when Barker Vale Blues musicians were playing at the end near the library. The piano is also beautiful in silence, a collaborative effort worth celebrating and preserving. Jane

My young son loves to walk into town just to play the piano. He’s had such a great time learning about all the keys, pedals and admiring the painting. Great initiative and very grateful it hasn’t been damaged.

I love having the piano in Stratheden street. I think is has been beautifully painted and is a fine addition to our “friendly” town. I am pleased that it has not been damaged in its three month trial period, and support it staying in place, as a sign of our trust in the goodness of people.

This piano has injected life, colour and movement into our beautiful little community. People stop to talk to you when you sit and play. They stop to dance in the street when a tune moves them. While browsing the garden centre just yesturday I could hear fun tunes coming from the street and it changed the feeling immediately. Please keep the piano. It is a link between generations and food for our souls. I love the piano. It is also gaining notice around the world, putting Kyogle on the global map. My Swedish visitor was sharing footage of Aviv playing on Wednesday to her global audience, so this piano has the potential to launch music careers from the streets of Kyogle. And I absolutely love the artwork. Its epic! Keep the piano!

Having the piano out on the street has been fabulous. It's lovely to hear the sounds of music from near and far as it makes me smile with joy. It's great to see so many young people also tinkering and playing some amazing pieces on the keyboard. I hope that this now precious rejuvenated piece of wonder stays forever more, to be nurtured and enjoyed by all. It's artwork by Sally is gorgeous.

I don't play the piano but always walk by hoping to find someone playing when I come to town. It gives me great pleasure and puts a smile on my face when I can stand and listen to our beautiful community piano being played. I thank Council for the opportunity this gives to young and old and the pleasure to all. Please keep our piano.

I love the piano! I’ve had a little quiet play - I am a bit rusty - but also have been able to enjoy some very accomplished players (and singers) on a couple of visits to town. Even when there is noone playing it stands out as a moment of beauty with Sally Joyce’s painting on the piano. I love art on the street like this. It’s very welcoming. And the piano is tucked out of the way against a wall so it doesn’t seem to impact anyone’s use of the footpath.

Our visitors of all ages have loved the street piano. My 5 & 7 year old nephews were amazed they were allowed, even more so encouraged to interact and play. It was simple, pure joy. Each time we've taken visitors down to see it we've purchased breakfasts/ lunches and coffees so even though the piano is a refreshingly free community asset, I believe it does provide economic advantages to local businesses.

My vision impaired son Tom would be possibly the greatest fan of Kyogle’s street piano. Piano donated kindly by locals and beautifully painted by Sally Joyce. A wonderful community gift for all to use and enjoy.
Callout for artists interested in volunteering to paint the piano.
