Kyogles Stratheden Street Piano is here!
The idea was put forward in 2025 as a means to creative community engagement - street pianos have been placed in towns and cities all over the world to add colour and music to streetscapes.
The upright piano, generously donated by a local resident, has taken its place on Stratheden Street next to the Kyogle Memorial Institute Hall (KMI) in the next few months. There it will be available for anyone to sit down and play, from practiced musicians to curious passersby. The Stratheden Street Piano aims to bring joy, spontaneity and shared connection to town.
The piano will be in place for a three-month trial while Council gathers community feedback.
Local artist Sally Joyce has been selected to transform the donated piano into a piece of art.
Kyogle Council would like to thank community members who have volunteered their time and skills to make the piano a beautiful and in-tune, work of art. Sally Joyce for her original hand-painted artwork in collaboration with Aunty Kali McBride, Angus Joyce and Toby Joyce. As well as expert contributions from Anna Woltman and Vaughan Davies in getting the piano up to scratch for its new home.

Share your thoughts and experiences about the street piano here. Positive and critical feedback is welcome. This feedback will inform Council's review of the Street Piano at the end of the 3-month pilot project. For example:
Do you love the artwork?
Does the sound of music inspire you to have a go?
Does the piano impact on how you use the space?
The GUESTBOOK has closed. A report will be reviewed at the October 2026 Council meeting.
We travelled to Kyogle and had the privilege of playing the beautiful street piano and admiring it’s gorgeous artwork with friends. We’ve also loved seeing the joy in others playing the piano when it’s posted on the community Facebook page. We hope you retain the piano and incorporate regular tuning into its upkeep just like you would a playground or sports field. Thanks for making the piano available to the community.

We love the piano. Mu 11 year old is learning piano and visits the street piano weekly to practice. She says "i want be able to play a whole song on it one day". It brings peoole in and creates community...gives the town a creative vibe and looks beautiful too. Keep the piano!!

I love the St piano. I love the artwork and I love walking around that area and hearing people play the piano. I have seen people of all ages play it and have been surprised by the talent of people. It’s lovely to realise that it isn’t a lost art and that many people are still playing and learning to play.
Hearing people play the piano as I do my shopping etc makes me feel connected to the community and proud to live here. I cannot play the piano but I love seeing and hearing others use it.

I visit Kyogle weekly, and notice that the piano is often used. I feel that, as a practical object and a beautiful work of art, it should be more visible, perhaps located in the main street, or a sign be made {preferably by Sally Joyce} to direct more people to its location. It is a great asset to the town.

My name is Aunty Kali McBride and it was a huge honor to be involved in this spectacular project. I can see the piano being used throughout the 3-month period and should be left permanently in strathdeen st. The community are still playing it until nine in the evening. I would like the council to pay for a security camera, set pointing away from the toilet block. I am deeply concerned that the mulli mulli mob(woodenbong) will damage it. Anytime kyogle has something lovely they tend get jealous to destroy it. As the whole project was done by people volunteering their time, it would be good for the council to fund the security camera. Perhaps ask Aunty Danielle if some funds be allocated from the culture heritage budget. Thank you to all of the council for saying yes to this piano. It means the world to so many of us especially our next generation. Could you please bring up my suggestion for the security cameras with Aunty D at your next meeting in chambers. Bugelbeh Wala Wala. Thank you for this opportunity to share with you today. Yumbeleh.
Callout for artists interested in volunteering to paint the piano.
