Kyogles Stratheden Street Piano is coming soon!

The idea was put forward in 2025 as a means to creative community engagement - street pianos have been placed in towns and cities all over the world to add colour and music to streetscapes.

The upright piano, generously donated by a local resident, has taken its place on Stratheden Street next to the Kyogle Memorial Institute Hall (KMI) in the next few months. There it will be available for anyone to sit down and play, from practiced musicians to curious passersby. The Stratheden Street Piano aims to bring joy, spontaneity and shared connection to town.

The piano will be in place for a three-month trial while Council gathers community feedback.

Local artist Sally Joyce has been selected to transform the donated piano into a piece of art.

Kyogle Council would like to thank community members who have volunteered their time and skills to make the piano a beautiful and in-tune, work of art. Sally Joyce for her original hand-painted artwork in collaboration with Aunty Kali McBride, Angus Joyce and Toby Joyce. As well as expert contributions from Anna Woltman and Vaughan Davies in getting the piano up to scratch for its new home.

My name is Aunty Kali McBride and it was a huge honor to be involved in this spectacular project. I can see the piano being used throughout the 3-month period and should be left permanently in strathdeen st. The community are still playing it until nine in the evening. I would like the council to pay for a security camera, set pointing away from the toilet block. I am deeply concerned that the mulli mulli mob(woodenbong) will damage it. Anytime kyogle has something lovely they tend get jealous to destroy it. As the whole project was done by people volunteering their time, it would be good for the council to fund the security camera. Perhaps ask Aunty Danielle if some funds be allocated from the culture heritage budget. Thank you to all of the council for saying yes to this piano. It means the world to so many of us especially our next generation. Could you please bring up my suggestion for the security cameras with Aunty D at your next meeting in chambers.
Bugelbeh Wala Wala. Thank you for this opportunity to share with you today.
Yumbeleh.
